God Rules the Nations - A Guide to the Book of Daniel
|
|
The Book of Daniel is a surprising mixture, containing well-known and loved Bible stories, very
popular in children’s picture Bibles, such as the fiery furnace, and Daniel in the lion’s den, but also containing mysterious visions which are the source of much speculation, debate and argument.
This book begins with a consideration of the greatly debated authorship of the Book of Daniel, together with much historical information about the periods particularly relevant to a study of Daniel. These include the Neo-Babylonian Empire, the Persian Empire, the empire and conquests of Alexander the Great, as well as the events during the so-called "400 silent years" of the inter-testamental period, with a particular focus on Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the evil ruler of the Seleucid kingdom who attempted to destroy Judaism in the second century BC.
This book contains a detailed explanation of the text of the Book of Daniel, looking at the events in their historical and cultural context. An attempt is made to explain the visions, looking at the way Daniel was given a remarkable insight into events yet to come during the Inter-Testamental period.
